WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE ?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that has been developed and practised in China for thousands of years. It is a system of diagnosis and treatment enabling a free flow of energy or Qi ( Chi ) throughout the body.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Acupuncture works by inserting fine needles into certain points on the body to stimulate the body's own energy to release any blockages. This creates a balance flow to alleviate pain and help to treat various health conditions.

DOES IT HURT?

Generally not, many people feel relaxed during and after treatment although some points can give a slight discomfort.

WHAT DOES TREATMENT ENTAIL?

During the first consultation a full medical history is taken regarding your condition and your lifestyle followed by a Traditional Chinese diagnosis, which takes the pulses of the wrists and examines the tongue to assess the condition of the 'meridians' or energy lines in the body.

During this consultation the first treatment is given to the patient. Once the diagnosis is established the treatment plan is decided. Please allow 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the first appointment followed by 45 minuites to 1 hour long for the continual treatment. It is advisble to wear comfortable clothing during each session.

Treatment uses fine needles inserted shallowly into the skin to stimulate the energy flow throughout the body. The needles are left in place for a minimum of 20 minutes whilst you rest.

The number of treatments required will vary from person to person but it is usually once per week until the person feels better. Many patients also use acupuncture as a preventative measure after being cured of their symptoms to maintain full health and well being.

IS IT SAFE?

Acupuncture is a very safe form of treatment if practiced correctly. It does not tend to give any side effects and I always use single use pre-sterilised needles, which are disposed of after each treatment.

WHO CAN HAVE ACUPUNCTURE?

Anyone can have acupuncture regardless of age or illness and treatment can be used in conjunction with western drug therapy, but as with any medical treatment, there are certain contraindications for acupuncture treatment including

  • seizure disorders

  • contagious skin infections or diseases

  • drug or alcohol intoxication

  • bleeding disorder such as haemophillia.
